An in-class introduction (approximately 15–20 minutes) is recommended for the instructor to present unique characteristics of nonprofit organizations and to introduce the case study. The instructor should emphasize that the case is designed to imitate a real-world scenario, therefore, the information provided by the “client” (Jennifer in the case study) is incomplete, which requires the students to exercise professional judgement and use problem-solving skills.
We typically recommend that the case requirements be completed outside of the classroom. However, if additional class time is available and the students have computer access in the classroom, the assignment could be started during class and finished outside the classroom. Some amount of work on the assignment outside the classroom is important to allow students time for problem solving and thoughtful consideration of relevant costs to include in the budget.
