These teaching notes discuss specific grammar items in the Business Writing Mechanics (BWM) learning strategy as well as specific implementation items for use in a learning management system (LMS). The BWM learning strategy covers four modules: (1) Effective Written Communication, (2) Basic Grammar, (3) Advanced Grammar, and (4) Business Grammar. The specific topics covered in the Basic Grammar, Advanced Grammar, and Business Grammar quizzes are presented in Appendix A, Appendix B, and Appendix C, respectively.
One of the coauthors developed the list of commonly misused/confused words based on both four years of student submissions in a graduate capstone course and websites.1 Then the coauthor focused on words that would be more commonly used in business writing (e.g., “estimatable” versus “estimable”) and ignored the words not often used in business writing (i.e., “breathe” versus “breath”).
