This case study aims to cause students to think critically about predicting store success and developing a valid performance measure for store managers of a chain of big-box retail stores. Students begin by extracting and transforming data from an extensive Microsoft Access database specifically created for this case study. They then analyze (by performing correlation and regression) these data using Microsoft Excel Power Pivot, Microsoft Power BI, or both. Below, we provide the steps instructors can follow to successfully implement this case in their class, including suggested resources to support the discussion of performance measurement concepts and statistical concepts in class. In addition, we provide sample solution files in both Power Pivot and Power BI (available for download in Appendix A), as well as a sample case memo that a student might write after completing the case analysis and a sample grading rubric.
