Herbert Lawrence (“Larry”) Dennis is a former department head and accounting faculty member at the University of North Georgia, although most of his service was with the preconsolidation North Georgia College and State University.1 He began teaching at North Georgia in 1968 after several years of experience as a certified public Accountant (CPA) and finishing his Master of Science in Accountancy at the University of South Carolina-Columbia (USC). While teaching at North Georgia, he earned a D.B.A. from the University of Kentucky. His full-time teaching duties ended 30 years later, although he taught as an adjunct for another decade and served as an on-campus accounting tutor until 2019. He was appointed the first Dean of Business and Government at North Georgia in 1995. Professor Dennis was asked, as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Academy of Accounting Historians, to contribute an essay to illustrate what life was like as a junior accountant in the 1960s, the CPA exam experience during the precalculator era, and how technology in the classroom has changed since the 1960s.
