Richard K. Fleischman, Jr. (1941–2020) was an accounting historian par excellence. His love for doing such research was infectious. Gregarious, and competitive, Dick lived life to the fullest. He began his academic career with a B.A. in history from Harvard, followed by an M.A. and Ph.D. in history from State University of New York at Buffalo (University at Buffalo, SUNY; hereafter, SUNY/B), winding up teaching in that discipline at the University of Hawaii. Seeking new opportunities, he was acutely aware of limited academic positions available in history in contrast to accounting of all fields. Accordingly, Dick decided to pursue an M.B.A. with an accounting concentration at SUNY/B. He also earned a CPA license in Ohio to enhance his credentials for academic accounting, having no interest in professional practice.
