I was heartbroken to hear of Michael's death. I heard from him less than two weeks prior to that sad passing regarding a paper we had been working on. In it, he apologized and told me he felt he had let me down, but that he had been in and out of the hospital, feeling poorly and looking worse, and was soon to see a surgeon. He encouraged me to continue on the work we had started. Typical of Michael to be thinking of someone else when facing his own end.
